This unpainted plaster wall gives you a sense of what the house looked like over its first 20 years, bare plaster until the Neills purchased the property in 1876 and papered the walls. You can also see that for a period of time picture molding was installed over the plaster - this would have supported artwork hanging from the molding instead of from the walls, which would have been damanged every time a nail was hammered into the plaster.

A cedar lintel similar to this one is embedded above every window and doorway in the original main house. Note the lack of finish - the lintel is only planed (flattened) on one side and unworked otherwise. It is a testament to the strength of cedar that it supported the windows from the heavy solid stone walls for 150 years prior to reniforcement.
